What Size Dumpster Do I Need? A Plant City Homeowner’s Guide
The honest answer is that most people order too big. Here is how to pick between a 20, 30 and 40 yard dumpster based on what you are actually throwing away.
Most people call us asking for the biggest dumpster we have. Nine times out of ten, that is the wrong call — and it can cost you money rather than save it.
Here is how to actually think about it.
Volume is not your only limit
Every roll off container has two limits: how much space is inside it, and how much weight it can legally carry down the road. People only think about the first one.
If you are throwing away framing lumber, cabinets, carpet, drywall and furniture, you will run out of space long before you run out of weight. Volume is your constraint, so a bigger can is genuinely better.
If you are throwing away concrete, dirt, brick, tile or roofing shingles, the opposite is true. You will hit the weight ceiling with the container barely a third full. Ordering a 40 yard for a concrete job means you are paying more for a container you cannot legally fill.
That is the single most useful thing to understand before you book anything.
The 20 yard: most homeowners start here
Dimensions run about 22 feet long, 8 feet wide and 4.5 feet high. That last number matters more than people expect — the low walls mean you can pitch material over the side without a ladder, and you can walk a wheelbarrow right up to it.
Order a 20 yard for:
- A garage, attic or single-room cleanout
- A single-layer roof tear-off on an average Plant City house
- A kitchen or bathroom remodel
- Any job that is mostly concrete, dirt, brick or tile
The 30 yard: the contractor workhorse
Same footprint as the 20 yard, but the walls are about six feet high. It fits the same driveways and the same job sites, and it swallows a lot more bulky material.
Order a 30 yard for:
- A whole-home renovation
- New residential construction
- A full house cleanout including furniture and appliances
- Large landscaping jobs with brush and yard waste
The 40 yard: volume, not weight
Eight foot walls. This is the biggest container we run, and it is built for jobs generating a lot of light, bulky debris.
The thing to know: at eight feet tall you are not tossing anything over the side. You are loading through the swing door at the back, or you have a machine doing the loading. If you are a homeowner working by hand, a 40 yard is usually more container than you can comfortably fill.
Order a 40 yard for:
- Major demolition
- Commercial tear-outs and tenant build-outs
- Large storm cleanup
- Any site where debris is coming faster than one crew can clear it
A shortcut that actually works
Count your pickup truck loads. Roughly speaking a 20 yard is six truck loads, a 30 yard is nine, and a 40 yard is twelve. Estimate how many loads your pile would be, then add one — everybody underestimates.
