What You Can and Can’t Put in a Roll Off Dumpster in Florida
One prohibited item can get an entire load rejected at the scale — and that cost lands on you. Here is the list, and what to do with the things that cannot go in.
When a loaded container reaches the transfer station, it gets inspected. If the inspector spots a prohibited item, they can reject the entire load — not just the one item. That rejection has a cost, and it gets passed along.
So this list is worth two minutes of your time.
What you can throw in
Basically everything a normal job site produces:
- Construction and demolition debris — lumber, drywall, siding, trim
- Brush and yard waste — limbs, palm fronds, sod, clippings
- Concrete, brick, block and masonry
- Roofing materials, including shingles and underlayment
- Household junk — furniture, boxes, clothing, toys
- Remodeling debris — cabinets, countertops, flooring, tile, fixtures
- Storm cleanup debris
What has to stay out
These are rejected at Florida disposal facilities:
Liquids of any kind. Paint, stain, solvents, motor oil, fuel, pool chemicals, cleaning chemicals. Fully dried-out latex paint cans are sometimes acceptable — ask first.
Tires. Handled through a separate recycling stream, never in general waste.
Batteries. Car batteries and rechargeable batteries both.
Appliances with Freon. Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers. The refrigerant has to be professionally recovered first. Once that is done and it is certified, the shell can usually go in.
Propane tanks and pressurized cylinders. Even empty ones. They can explode when a load is compacted.
Asbestos. Common in pre-1980 flooring, popcorn ceilings, pipe insulation and some siding. This requires a licensed abatement contractor — do not put it in a container, and do not disturb it yourself.
Medical and biohazard waste. Sharps, pharmaceuticals, contaminated material.
Electronics, in some cases. TVs and monitors especially. Ask us about your specific load.
Where the leftovers actually go
Hillsborough County and Polk County both run household hazardous waste collection sites that take paint, chemicals, batteries and electronics from residents, usually free. Tire shops take tires. Appliance recyclers and many HVAC contractors handle Freon recovery.
It is one extra trip, and it is far cheaper than a rejected load.
The weight thing nobody mentions
Beyond what is allowed, there is what is practical. Heavy dense material — concrete, dirt, brick, tile, shingles — will hit the weight allowance long before it fills the container.
